Murals have a wonderfully long history. It can be said that murals have existed since the times when people were able to paint, scratch, or carve something from wood. These paintings tend to be done on ceilings, walls, or any large surface. The history is very long and very rich as well. From ancient times, this form of art was a part of people’s everyday life. In the beginning, they were painted on the cave walls. People noted the things they saw, such as different creatures, situations, or other people or beings. Those cave and stone wall paintings date back 40,000 plus years. Many of them were placed on Mayan temples, and most of them represent the lives of the people back then, their rituals, customs and culture. The use of theses was also prevalent in ancient Egypt, India, Mesopotamia, Greece and Rome. For a long period, decorations were placed on the walls of the churches or other buildings. Artists would carve these from wood, or stone, and their main purpose was to tell a story or educate people who did not know how to read. Visual images, pictures and language are some of the strongest communication forms, which is why this art form has such a great impact. The tradition of using these beautiful paintings on church walls still exists today, in churches covering the entire globe.
Mural work has been utilized in different ways for centuries. Their history is incredible, but their function has varied from one period to another. Their purpose is not always the same for every culture. This form of painting was quite important, and it still is in the Tibetan world. They are a part of Buddhist practices. Biblical artworks were painted in Germany, France and England during the Baroque period, and those were usually requested by wealthy patrons and royalty. Most of them were placed on the ceilings and walls of their luxurious homes.
Times are changing fast, and the use of wall painting has become different thorough the years. In the beginning, most of them were used on the insides of caves, churches, houses or libraries, but today, they are put on the outsides of buildings as well. These images have been very powerful tools that were and still are used to inspire millions of people driven by war and enormous political differences. One of the most famous mural movements was the Mexican mural movement. Also known as the three great ones (los tres grandes), and the most famous artists were David Siqueiros, Jose Orozco, and Diego Rivera. Rivera painted many of these in New York City, Detroit and San Francisco. Ireland has some of the most significant political artworks. More than 2,000 of these have been painted all around Northern Ireland since the 1970’s. They represent hope in a better tomorrow, for all those people who lived in troubling times. For example, an entire district in San Francisco is dedicated to this type of artwork. If you ever find yourself there, do not forget to visit the Mission District. They are part of a unique tradition, and you can see more than 600 painted there.
Their popularity is very present today as well. Graffiti became a form of art, and you can see it in almost every city in the world, from Berlin, New York, Paris to Barcelona. In most countries, graffiti has become a tool of rebellion for city youth, mostly used to spread political propaganda. Artists are painting them on the building walls, boxcars or sometimes even subway trains. But for the more traditional work many people are ordering them from Clark’s Murals to make the interior of their homes prettier and more attractive. When it comes to homes, they can be incorporated into every room. People are ordering them for their bedrooms, bathrooms, dining rooms and living rooms. Fees vary, and they are dependent on the size, perplexity and the owners wishes. Usually, they are applied to the larger walls, but they can also be applied to the smaller ones as well. Materials and techniques (e.g. Trompe L’oeil or Faux painting) used are numerous. One of these masterful artworks can make an entire area richer and more beautiful. In many cities all around the world, murals on the streets and building walls are used to bind people together. It has become noticeable that people are estranged, and the painters are trying to point to the important role of the community. Some of them are intended to make the walls or even the whole street more beautiful, happier and cheerful. The world without murals would not be as impressive as it is today, because no matter which city you live in, you can likely find a one of these, and you can get inspiration and hope.
